recently, i made the grave mistake of running with scissors.

not literally. however, the metaphoric stab wound runs deep.

making good decisions quickly is a skill that someone in my position has to master eventually. i’m okay at it, but i must get better. one decision that i’ve been taught NOT to rush: hiring… (the thing i rushed.)

so why the hell did i hire this broad without her having earned my trust? i don’t know…i was excited? it’s a good thing that i’m experienced with applying band-aids to public ouwies…i’m still cleaning up her mess, but I was able to divert any major damage. a huge wake-up call this was!

it’s important to remember that we can never let the basics slip out of sight: don’t run with scissors! hiring is a fundamental element of expanding your network. but you must hire with caution. people are like scissors; fascinating design, but still fucking sharp and potentially very dangerous! whether a new hire for your business or a new friend you’re allowing into your network, be patient and build a relationship first.

the take away: it’s up to you to know if and when your new friend has made the cut and conversely, when you should in fact, cut them.

if not, be prepared to bleed your damn self.

it’s been 2 weeks since my last blog. i’ve been a busy woman…road tripping, dodging rumors, you know…normal stuff.

but here I am, fired up and ready to nip some shit in the bud…

i want to talk about female professionals in the entertainment industry and the chronic sexism that we face. we face sexism. chronically. its annoying. first of all, i’ve been known to be stronger than the average female, physically and emotionally. years of competitive soccer (concussions and all) and 2 extremely gnarly breakups later, i can handle a little hurt feeling every now and then… it comes with the territory. but foreal, fresh out of a week long depression about this issue i’m thinking how much is too much?! to my male (and female) colleagues: i ain’t a killa, but don’t push me.

by the nature of the industry, female professionals are well-aquainted with sexism IN FRONT of the camera and mostly tolerant…we have to be (its entertainment, remember). howeverrrrrrrrr, how thick does our skin have to be BEHIND the camera?

frankly, women in leadership roles in any industry, are held to higher standards, while our male colleagues can wyl’out as heads turn the other way. and the common advice given to women tackling this issue: step your game up…

men and women alike (yes, women can be incredibly sexist against other women), in and around Hollywood will tear you to shreds if you let them, so it is important to stock your ammo nice and neatly in the shed for later use. in other words, do your homework so you can be good at your job. credibility will win. as long as you’re confident when the guns are drawn, you can calmly skip to the shed when the time comes.

soooooooo, what’s a girl to do when it was her killer game that got her in this jam in the first place?! not saying that there’s no room for improvement, but if my game is better than yours as it is, why must I step my game up? seriously, instead of adjusting your professional style to blend in with the BRUHS as a survival technique, i suggest picking and choosing your professional settings to align with your values.

the take away: women with power will always be scary to most…and the scandals will come inevitably, but it’s up to us to strong-arm unnecessary dramz. at the end of the day our skill is our ammo and it’s only as impressive as our ability to use it to our advantage. so we gotta stock up, grin, and aim directly at the glass ceiling.

by definition, a beggar is one who gets by, by asking for money and food (or in this case, friends) and is one to be pitied… ouch. most of the time these serial #followers, are far from being actual leaders offline. not surprised.

clearly, they have no social-cue-schwag. knowing how to read how others read you is a must. and begging is what happens when you don’t get it.

the latest addition: having humility.

its true. newcomers cannot penetrate the entertainment industry by being soft, unsure, and blending in…and definitely NOT as a self-absorbed, know-it-all (because you will get chewed up and spit out). in a world where individuality is mandatory (and too often misinterpreted), having a grandiose view of oneself and one’s talent is unfortunately a stomach-turning default mode for many.

with that said, lets be confident not arrogant!
